S1E3 What is Insight?
Feb 1, 2024
Feb 1, 2024
58 min
In the third episode of Insights with Us, Sadie and I work to define insight and use real world examples from our lives to understand how to build insight. We then end by discussing ways to build mindfulness, be in the present moment, ways to slow down this process and learn to sit with yourself in small ways.
The definitions we discuss today in regards to insight:
APA definition: “the clear and often sudden discernment of a solution to a problem [often] by means that are not obvious and may never become so”
NIH definition: “people’s understanding of their condition, but also how their condition affects their interactions with the world”
Three kinds of insight (Dr. Sternberg and Dr. Davidson):
Pulling relevant information from irrelevant information (selective encoding)
What information do you already know that can be useful to your current situation (selective comparison)
Look at all the information that is available and find a solution from there (selective combination)
